Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On June 16th, 2018 the day before Father's Day we were thrilled to find out that I was pregnant. My sister got married on Saturday July 7th and we told my family, including our 4 year old daughter that we were pregnant on that next Sunday. Everyone was so excited and Lucca was thrilled to be a big sister. On Tuesday July 10th, we went in for our first 8 week ultrasound. The baby looked great and had a strong heartbeat. Unfortunately, that appointment quickly turned to worry in my doctor's eyes. She saw, what she thought was a cyst on my ovary along with a lot of fluid. She sent me back in to complete additional bloodwork, which was different from that morning, and she also scheduled an MRI for the next day. On Wednesday, I proceeded to have 2 MRIs of my lower and upper abdomen. On my way home from work my doctor called and she did not want to talk to me while I was driving, and I knew something was wrong. Bart and I anxiously waited for her call. When she did call she said those dreaded words that we will never forget "You have ovarian cancer".  She told me that it was in fact a tumor on my ovary and my blood tests and the MRI confirmed the same. The next day we saw our Gynecological Oncologist and she had more bad news. She explained that ovarian cancer has a difficult prognosis, with the average life time left for me of 4-5 years. We would also need to be aggressive in having surgery for a possible full hysterectomy, including the removal of the baby in order to remove the tumor and cancer to give me a fighting chance. The surgery is scheduled for Tuesday July 17th. My recovery will be 6 weeks and then I will start chemotherapy 8 weeks after the surgery, for the next 6 months with the hopes of putting me into remission.

There are so many emotions that we have; disbelief, grief, sadness, anger, anxiety, confusion and so many more so it would be difficult to put into words. Thank you in advance for your prayers and support. We need everything that we can get because this will not defeat us. I have too much to live for and this prognosis is not an option for me. This will not be my final story. My Lucca needs her Mommy and my Bart needs his wife. I am a fighter.

Journal entry by Bart Dellisanti

Surgery went as expected.

Thankfully, the cancer was isolated to the pelvic region and showed very little spreading in that region. As a preventive measure, the Doctor decided to take the lymph nodes in addition to completing the full hysterectomy.

As you can imagine, it is pretty difficult for her to enjoy these fine accommodations at Rex. She has a lot of pain to work through, but at least she is on the path to recovery. She was able to eat some eggs and apple sauce for breakfast and we just finished up her 3rd "walk of the hall tour".

Thanks for all the well wishes. It is greatly appreciated.

Much Love,

B
