Kim’s Story

Site created on December 29, 2022

On December 20, Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer. It, maybe obviously, came as a complete shock to us.  Thank you for being with us in this journey.  She had her first chemo treatment on 1/13/23 and will be in some kind of treatment or recovery from surgery for all of 2023.

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Morgan D'Avis

The radiation oncologist looked at Kim on Thursday after moving to sit next to her, put her arm around Kim's shoulder and, without any hint of pity/trepidation/questioning, said "I've got you. I’ve got you." It wasn't necessary for her to do that. There was a resident in the room too and that could have been seen as unprofessional or too emotional. It wasn't. It was what Kim needed to hear in that exact moment. Dr. R has a certain kind of matter-of-fact-ness to her that is comforting, not off putting or brusque. It instills confidence in her decision making and planning.

We're really bad at this journaling thing. It's been over a month, sorry.  The reason I mention our radiation oncologist is because Kim's next steps are...you guessed it...radiation. She's been in chemo again for a few cycles and has one more treatment on Friday. We’re waiting to get radiation scheduled  - it will be every day for three weeks in Longmont. Luckily it's probably going to be only 45 minutes away instead of an hour and twenty minutes away (for a 15 minute appointment).

Once radiation is finished and the skin is healed up enough, Kim will likely need another 6 months of chemo and immunotherapy.

It's been more clear lately that the kids are over mom being gone for all these appointments and they are in tune with the stress we're feeling too. I think we're ALL over this whole thing and are hoping this is one of the last steps. Thanks for being with us.
