Heather’s Story

Site created on November 11, 2023

Welcome to our Kidney for Heather Boyd CaringBridge website. We are using this site to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement as we wait for the Lord to provide a new kidney for Heather (or two completely healed kidneys).  Heather's story, summed up: Heather had a health delivery in late October 2021, but her bilirubin level rose quickly to the high risk zone. Her doctors advised that Heather have an exchange transfusion to treat the high bilirubin. During the transfusion Heather went into cardiac arrest.  The nurses quickly administered CPR and oxygen, saved Heather's life, and stopped the transfusion. The cardiac arrest led to other complications, including acute kidney failure. Shortly thereafter, Heather was transferred to Seattle Children's Hospital, where she was on dialysis in the NICU for 150 days.  We found a rental in Seattle quite close to the hospital. Sheri (Mom) and Ben (Dad) visited (and cared for) Heather in the NICU daily, with a few gaps due to COVID. Heather's siblings were all able to visit Heather in the NICU. Heather had a peritoneal dialysis catheter surgically placed in her abdomen, and after testing the catheter two weeks in the hospital, we brought her home (to the Seattle rental), and then, back to Oregon a couple of weeks later.  Caring for Heather is often draining, but we are thankful for so many things - that Heather is on peritoneal dialysis at home,  that she is growing, that she raises her hands during prayer time, that she says "Amen" a bit off cue, that she is surrounded by her adoring siblings, and that the Lord continues to protect Heather's life through dangers known and unknown. Thank you for visiting, thanks for praying.
