Kevin’s Story

Site created on December 14, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Kevin had a planned partial sigmoid colon resection on November 27th. He discharged from the hospital on November 28th in good condition. We ended up back in the hospital on November 29th due to a fever. He was questionably treated for this with antibiotics and sent was sent home on December 2nd. We were unsure if this was the right decision but his care team seemed to think he was "fine". He was at home, struggling with fevers and severe pain and finally gave in on December 5th and was ready to go back to the ER because something wasn't right.
On the evening of December 5th, Kevin had emergency surgery to remove a massive abscess and dead colon caused by poor blood flow to his colon after his 1st surgery.
Kevin was hit hard by severe sepsis and he went into shock and his body has been fighting ever since to recover. We have been transferred St. Luke's for continued care and specialty surgeons and doctors.
We pray for a full recovery. We need our vibrant, full of life Kevin back. Our world isn't the same without him! Please continue to pray, send positive energy and light for Kevin and our family.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Susie Hiller

It's been quite awhile since I have updated here. That's a good thing! We are getting back to normal! Kevin started working from home 2 weeks ago and started going back into the office to work last week. He is tired out when he comes home but he is getting back into the swing of things! He is eating like a normal person
Weekly wound care appointments are still happening. His wound is closed except for one tiny spot where there was a stitch that was tied about 15 times. (I remember the surgeon telling me about this stitch on December 15th). Yesterday, it was cut out and then his wound should be completely healed very soon. Maybe 1 or 2 more appointments with our wound care friends.
He had a CT scan last week Friday. We spoke to the surgeon about it yesterday. All looks good. And we should make an appointment in the next few weeks with the colorectal surgeon to start discussing the next surgery to get rid of the colostomy. This doesn't mean it is going to happen soon but at least we can get an idea of a timeline on this. Realistically, 6 to 12 months from the 2nd surgery which was December 5th).
We will be going to Mexico on Saturday. A trip we had planned well before this all started. We got the green light from the surgeon before he even left the hospital and with the last CT looking good and talking with surgeon again yesterday, we feel confident that this trip is a "go". And we sure do need this!

With that, I will probably not be posting here much more because we are just trying to live our normal life again!

I will keep this CaringBridge open and will update here when it is time for the next surgery because we will need all the prayers and good vibes we can get, as going under the knife for another big surgery does seem a little daunting after all he has been through.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the support and prayers from alllll of you.
