Karen’s Story

Site created on March 17, 2018

Our family had a wonderful Christmas in Charleston, but Mom came home to Virginia with some back pain.  Over the next couple of weeks, the back pain increased.  She had neck surgery in the 1990's and expected the same disc problem had reoccured.  Following an MRI, Mom's family doctor asked to see both Mom and Dad in his office right away.  We knew then, we were not dealing with a displaced disc.

Mom's MRI showed her bones had lesions throughout her entire  body, likely  due to Multiple Myeloma, cancer of the bone marrow.  Shock can't begin to describe the feelings we all felt.  Mom was rushed to Riverside in Newport News for further evaluation where the diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma was confirmed.  Since then, we have had so many high's and lows.  We  sought out a specialist of Blood Cancers in Richmond at VCU who did further testing and unfortunately confirmed Mom's cancer is aggressive and advanced.  This changed everything.

We have just returned from Mt. Sinai in NYC where she saw renowned Multiple Myeloma oncologist Dr. Bart Barlogie, who will treat Mom in NYC from here on.  She underwent another week of tests, some more painful than others.  She's become a pro at bone marrow biopsy's. Mom and Dad are preparing to leave for the next three week trip where she will undergo intensive chemo, stem cell harvesting and prep for a bone marrow transplant.  Dr. Barlogie's approach to this disease is  aggressive and will push the entire timeline of treatment up drastically.  She will most likely have one bone marrow transplant in April/May, then another over the summer.  A bone marrow transplant is a grueling procedure which will require months of isolation as even a common  cold would be a dangerous threat to her "new" immune system.

We have great reason for hope as our family has each other combined with Dr. Barlogie,  the best MM doctor in the world.  Most of all, Mom 's greatest source of hope is through her deep faith. This has been a life altering event for all of us and on her behalf, we covet your prayers.

Mom and Dad will all be making the Upper East Side of NY their temporary home and we pray this is the place that heals her.    Please also pray for my Dad, he's has much on his shoulders.

It is with a heart full of joy and in thanksgiving to God that our family is happy to announce our prayers have been answered. Mom’s stem cell transplant, which took place on June 21 at Mt. Sinai Hospital, was a success. It is official, Mom has been declared in remission.

After a three week hospital stay, Mom and Dad have returned home to Gloucester.  As she recovers at home, our family continues to come together as a team to provide her care as she is very weak from the transplant and the residual effects of chemo therapy. We ask your continued prayers that her immune system and strength will soon be fully restored.

Despite the huge obstacle cancer put in our family’s path, we feel so very blessed. The outpouring of love and and support we have been shown has brought us immeasurable comfort, as has every one of your prayers. Each has given us peace, determination, hope and strength. Thank you.

It is a relief and blessing to share this wonderful news but because Multiple Myeloma is considered an incurable cancer, even in remission, we know Mom’s fight must continue.  Stem cell transplant #2 is pending this fall and we will learn in a few weeks whether Mom will be required to undergo this second procedure.  We hope this will not be the case but as we approach this uncertain road, we earnestly ask that you join us in praying with faith because as we have already so graciously experienced, this is when the most amazing things happen!
