Karen’s Story

Site created on December 7, 2023

In the fall of 2023, Karen was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. As there are so many who love Karen, we have started this CaringBridge site to keep people informed about how she is doing and how to be praying. Thank you for your love and prayers as we all navigate this unexpected journey.

Chemo Day!

It was another good day at Frauenshuh Cancer Center. We are at the point where we have been there enough that people know who we are. Mom has her favorite volunteers who wheel her out to the car or into appointments. Our favorite nurse, Lindsay, tries to get Mom on her schedule when it’s possible. The doctor and nurses remember things about us and ask how things are going. Makes our chemo days seem shorter when they are full of people who genuinely care.

Lots of continued good news on the lab front. Mom’s hemoglobin was at 8.7 - highest it’s been in months. She gained more weight! 🥳  Very exciting to see her continue to be stable.

The only number that caused some action is her neutrophils (white blood cells that help your immune system fight infection and heal). They were at the cut off level for her to receive chemo. If her number would have been any lower she would not have been able to receive treatment today. So moving forward on the days she goes in to get her take home chemo pump removed she will receive a shot that will help boost her neutrophil count. This is a very normal reaction to chemo so no one was surprised.

We stopped at Chick-fil-A on our way home to get salads for dinner. No cooking on chemo day! An added bonus to the drive home - Batman! He was driving in front of us (see pic).

We are thankful:
  • Mom’s numbers continue to be stable and that she has gained weight
  • Mom was able to receive treatment today and they have a plan going forward to boost her white blood cell count
  • We had our favorite nurse, Lindsay, today. She is a joy!
  • For a Batman sighting! 🦇🙋‍♂️👀😂

Prayers:
  • For minimal/no side effects - overall Mom’s side effects have decreased
  • For no issues with Mom’s chemo pump that she has until Thurs afternoon
  • For the new shot Mom will receive on Thursday to do it’s job and boost her white blood cell count
  • For protection from sickness for our whole household especially Mom

Thanks for your prayers and encouragement! You are a gift to us! 🩷
