Julie’s Story

Site created on November 29, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Since finding the lump in her left breast on 10/23, there has been a wild whirlwind of doctor visits (including a 2nd opinion at Karmanos), testing and procedures.  The lump and one enlarged lymph node, seen on a 3D mammogram and breast ultrasound, were both biopsied resulting in a diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma grade 3, of the lump, and metastatic carcinoma of the axillary lymph node.   She also learned that she is triple negative for hormone receptors which makes her ineligible for several targeted chemo regimens.  (And we always thought that she was a positive sort of gal!)

Subsequent testing (2D Echo) showed that her heart  will tolerate chemo & radiation, and there is no additional cancer visible in other organs (CT of the chest, abdomen & pelvis with contrast) or bones (whole body scan with contrast).  That is wonderful news!

She had a  chemo port installed on 11/14/18, and a PET scan later that week.  That scan was done primarily for the radiation oncology docs for use in their planning of targeted radiation post surgery.

Her  treatment plan is chemo, followed by surgery and then radiation. She'll be having 16 rounds of chemo that started on Monday, 11/19/18.

The first 4 rounds of infusion chemo were 2 weeks apart and the next 12 will be weekly, ending in late March.  Surgery will follow about a month later, with the extent of surgery dependent on the effects of chemo.  Radiation will take place about a month after surgery.

Be assured that she is  very confident that she’ll be joining the Breast Cancer Survivor’s Group at the end of this journey, sometime next year!  And know that she firmly believes that her faith, and the love, care and prayers of family and friends, along with good doctors (at Beaumont of course!) will see her through this.  Your prayers and positive thoughts mean the world to her and our family.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Missy Ewald

Here is the latest from my Mom:
Today I had #12 of 16 chemo rounds that started on November 19, 2018 and will end on April Fools Day hopefully!  Four more rounds to go, on next the 4 Monday’s - the countdown continues!

Chemo has been a roller coaster ride that’s included a number of nuisance side effects (loss of hair, total loss of appetite, taste of food changes, weight loss of 20 lbs.,  dropping blood counts resulting in one blood transfusion, mouth sores, back sores, peeling of numerous layers of skin on fingers resulting in pain and loss of fingerprints, darkening fingernail beds with results to be determined, FATIGUE, dizzy, dopey, and dim-witted - dubbed the 3D side effect).

Many of these side effects have been treated with medications and others should subside when chemo ends.  I am so very thankful for the for the variety of magical pre and post treatment anti-nausea drugs - I have had NO NAUSEA.   And that I have the luxury of napping as needed.

The very best news is that the tumors appear to be shrinking!  I give thanks daily for the power of good doctors and medicine, the positive thoughts and prayers of so very many, and the constant tender loving care of family and friends.  I remain firm in my belief that I will be joining the Breast Cancer Survivors Club at the end of this journey.

The plan remains surgery sometime in May, followed by radiation a month or so later.  Please keep the prayers coming for they are working on the cancer, and they are sustaining me!

With love, hope and gratitude,   Julie XO
