Judith’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

As many of you know, my mother, Judy Davis, has been feeling an assortment of aches and pains of increasing intensity for the past year or so.  In February, she experienced a pelvic fracture and began going to the doctor regularly to determine their root cause.  Nothing could be found.  In early July, doctors discovered a crushed vertebrate that they suggested might be strengthened by vertebroplasty, and she went in for this procedure in late July.  Less than a week later, she experienced a tremendous pain in her hip that we discovered was due to a fracture.  I took her to the emergency room, and they began an exhaustive series of tests that exposed lesions through many of her bones.  This was finally an answer to the pains she had been experiencing, but unfortunately, it was also a sign of cancer.  A biopsy confirmed that breast cancer, which she had beaten far back in 1990, had finally returned.  As if this wasn't bad enough, she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure several years ago, and while it has mostly been under control, it worries the doctors very much in her current condition.

The doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital continue to treat her and try to make her life more comfortable.  She has received a partial hip replacement and seems to be recovering from it.  A team of doctors is still determining the best course of action for her (rehab, palliative care, radiation, hormone therapy, etc), and I will use this website as a means of sharing any new information as I have it.

Mom is accepting visitors again, but only in small doses, and I've tried as best as I can to schedule them.  Currently, more than two visits from different people in a day seems to exhaust her, so I've been trying to plan around that as best as I can, and also keep them from overlapping when possible.

People have asked me what to bring, and she mostly has no requests.  She's got a strange aversion to sweet things right now, so she'd prefer people not bring anything like that.  Though she has a weird new craving for Coke.  She says she's never cared for it before, but now really enjoys it.

As I get new information, I'll do my best to post it here.  Thank you for your thoughts, concerns and prayers -- I know she appreciates them.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Yancy Davis

Last night, almost right after I reached out to several people in mom's address book to let them know of this website, I received a call from the nursing home.  The woman had a strong accent and kept saying "Your mother's state changed.  It was very quick.  Her state changed."  It was a confusing phrasing, and I finally had to ask if she had passed away, and was told that yes, she had.

When I saw her yesterday, it seemed like there had been a tremendous shift in her "state," though.  She was less present, but also did not look pained to me in any way.  She could barely speak, but still got a few words out as needed.  I showed her lots of old pictures, and she'd open her eyes to look sometimes, while keeping them firmly closed at others.  I asked if she wanted me to go away so she could sleep, and she told me "no."

I left last night after 5, telling her I'd be back to see her this morning, and that Mary Powell was coming to visit her shortly.  I believe Mary stayed until 8.  She passed away around 11:30 PM on September 2nd.

Her funeral will be at the Ohev Shalom cemetery on September 5th, at 3pm.

Following the service, family and close friends are invited to come to Mom's house for a light meal and to pay their respects. In addition, the afternoon/evening prayer service will be from 7:15 - 7:45, after which point we'll reflect and share wonderful memories of Judy until 9:00 pm.
