Journal entry by Jaclyn N. Sepp

Yesterday we met with the plastic surgeon that will be a big part of Josh’s upcoming surgery to have his bone flap replaced. Due to the amount of time that has passed, his surgeon has decided to not use his original skull bone and instead have a prosthetic made. We have an appointment this Thursday for a CT scan that they’ll use to make the mold for Josh’s new skull piece. This process takes 4-6 weeks so Josh’s surgery will likely be early May. It is a 4-7 day stay at the hospital after surgery and Kathy will be flying out to Austin to help us during this time.

Josh has been walking around with his quad cane and only minimally using his wheelchair. Yesterday we traversed a nearby golf course to watch the solar eclipse and Josh navigated the uneven grounds well, in addition to getting up and down from the ground. His balance has improved and he’s beginning to practice more with a cane that has a single point.

His right arm is continuing to improve and he’s begun wiggling his thumb and squeezing a ball with his fingers. His OT team helps him both stretch and activate the nerves (with electrodes). His handwriting, fine motor skills and memory are also showing signs of progress.
