Joseph’s Story

Site created on April 23, 2011

Welcome to Joe's CaringBridge website. We know how much you all care about Joseph and wanted an easy way to keep everyone informed about what is all going on with him. We are starting this a bit late but over the months and years things will continue to change with Joe and this is the best way to chronicle what all happens.  Thank you everyone for the continued support and prayers, it means the world to us!

Joseph John Ruedinger was born on 3-11-11 at 3:11pm. 7lbs 8oz and 21" long. It all seemed perfect at first. Joe was kicking and screaming just like any other newborn. I was waiting for the nurses to bundle Joe up and bring him to over to my bedside so that I could hold my new baby boy for the first time, but then suddenly something changed. Joe started turning blue around his lips and nose and this alerted the team that something was wrong. His oxygen levels were not climbing so they took him to the NICU to start oxygen and have him checked out by a neonatologist. At first the doctors thought that Joe wasn't tollerating the birth because it went so fast, but after a few very scary and lonely hours they suspected something was wrong with his heart and immediately had him transferred to Children's Hospital. Sadness can't even describe what John and I were feeling as he was being taken away by ambulance. When he arrived at Children's he was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries. This means the aorta and the pulmonary artery (the 2 big vessels that come off the heart) are switched and attached in the wrong place. In addition to this defect Joe also was diagnosed with Stenosis of the Pulmonary artery which means narrowing of the artery and in his case it was 50% narrower than what it should be which is pretty significant. Procedures and surgeries would need to be performed in order for him to survivie in the very near future. I am starting this page 6 weeks after all of this began and I had no idea what a long and difficult journey it would end up being for our little Joseph.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Natalie Ruedinger

Time for our annual summer update. A few weeks ago Joe had an MRI of his heart and today he had a stress test and an appt with his cardiologist Dr. Ginde to review the results of his MRI and stress test. The reason he had an MRI rather than an echo this year was to get a better peak at things.  The results of both were phenomenal. His heart is still functioning very well. His tricuspid is still leaky but not much change from last year. His conduit is still functioning perfectly. The results of his stress test showed that his heart is performing well when stressed with intense exercise. This is all very good news! Dr. Ginde thinks we are a good 3-5 years away yet until he’ll need his next open heart surgery to fix his tricuspid leak and replace his conduit. There will come a day when we will be told it’s time, but until then we are enjoying the ride!
