Journal entry by Bob Gunderson

Today was a day of transition for Jon as he begins his next stage towards the road to recovery.

We were able to visit with all of the doctors and nurses involved and they are all pleased with his progress.  However, the doctors did make us aware that Jon is not out of the woods.  His case is extremely rare and will remain under close watch for any developing irregularities.

The doctor who performed both of Jon's brain surgeries examined the results of a recent MRI and said there were no areas of fluid buildup or any areas of concern.  He was pleased with his healing and said he was ready for acute physical therapy (PT) at Region's Hospital.

While in PT, Jon will receive three hours of intense physical training to regain his strength and coordination on his journey back to health.  He is extremely committed to succeed and has a positive attitude towards getting well.  In his words, he is going to "crush it."

The speech therapist said his ability to swallow is improving but is still unable to eat and drink.  He will remain on a feeding tube for now but when he regains the ability to eat independently, it will be removed.

He remains on long-term antibiotics in an effort to eliminate any remaining pockets of infection deeply seated within his body.
