John’s Story

Site created on December 20, 2022

Sometimes life doesn't go the way you think the script should go.  On November 21st my life drastically changed when the Urgency Room physician came into the room to share that the cause of my three day old back pain was a 2.5 cm mass on my pancreas.  The following day, Tuesday, November 22nd, I was fortunate to get into the  Mayo Clinic where I met with a doctor who was able to schedule me for a biopsy the next morning. The biopsy confirmed that it was stage IV pancreatic caner.  Now receiving chemotherapy and partaking in a clinical drug study at Mayo, my new journey with a new script, has begun. I am blessed with the strongest and most loving partner in marriage and life, Rochelle, my three amazing sons Roman, Evan and Grant, our bonus son Devin, my parents Al and Kathy, my siblings Chris, Beth and Matt, Rochelle’s entire family, the significant others of our family members, and an amazing support network of friends from all times and parts of my life.  I am forever grateful for all of you, you lift me up.  With love and sincerity, John

Journal entry by John & Rochelle Woodward

Our hearts were shattered three weeks ago on Saturday, June 24th 2023 with the loss of our beautiful and beloved John. From his initial diagnosis in November through the final days of his fight, John’s resilience and optimism were unwavering.

We will always remember John’s kindness, positivity, compassion, honesty, and generosity. John lived presently, always striving to create special moments with family and friends. When spending time with John, one would be graced with his favorite music, from the Grateful Dead to opera, reggae to jazz. For himself and all of us, he cultivated a love for cooking, traveling, mountain biking, the MN Wild, lacrosse, skiing, reading, spotting sandhill cranes, cribbage, and spending time at Lake Owen—a place where many of our most treasured memories were made. John’s indominable spirit will live on in us and all who knew and loved him.

We are full of gratitude for your outpouring of love and support throughout this tumultuous journey. Your presence, prayers, gestures, kindness, and compassion helped us through the most difficult of times. Please join us for an open house celebration of John’s life on Monday, September 11th from 1:30-4:30 pm at 7 Vines Vineyard in Dellwood, MN. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s honor to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org) or True Friends (truefriends.org), an organization John was involved with and passionate about.

You can find John’s obituary published 7/16/23 online in the Star Tribune.
