This is Memorial Day weekend when we celebrate the life sacrifices made by many service members. I think of two Soldiers who deployed with me
To operation Desert Storm in 1991. SPC Peter
Swano died of illness before the war began. When
We deployed from Germany to Saudi Arabia in January 1991 the weather was cold and wet. The other was Captain Joe Kime, A logistics officer assigned to the Brigade staff in the S4 section. Joe and I Became Fast friends drawn close by our mutual faith in God. We talked often about the Bible and spiritual things. He was my spiritual battle
Buddy and a dear friend.  Joe was leading a truck convoy from Iraq back to Saudi Arabia to search
For tank and Bradley vehicle parts when his vehicle ran over a land mine.  He is buried in Arlington. Google Joseph Gordon Kime, Find a Grave.com to see photos and grave site. This Memorial Day as others I salute and honor Captain Joe Kime, III.. He left a wife, son and daughter behind. His wife died in 2021 and is now buried with him at Arlington. His son Joe Kime IV now has a boy Joe Kime V. Joe you wer a good man, a fine Soldier and I appreciate you my friend!
I also remember my great Uncle Colin Kauffman who volunteeredIn the Army and landed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry Division during WW II. His regiment fought in some of the bloodiest battles of The war such as the Huertgen Forrest. He and his girlfriend decided to wait unitl after the war to get married. Colin never came home. He was killed in Germany only one month before the end of the war. His girlfriend Jeanette never got married and died a widow. She only loved one man who was buried in an American military cemetery in Lorraine, France. May God bless you Uncle Colin and thank you. We remember you and honor your service.
