Jim’s Story

Site created on December 8, 2020

Dad fell last week and was briefly in the ER.  He was diagnosed with a UTI but nothing was broken.  His condition has continued to deteriorate since last week.  Yesterday, we made the decision to transfer Dad to Hospice Care.  Today, his team told us that Dad has the signs of Covid and that they don't anticipate him recovering from it.  They aren't testing him because that wouldn't change his course of treatment.  They are working to keep him as comfortable as possible.  We will keep you updated as we know more information and Dad's health situation progresses.

Journal entry by Beth Reichert

Dad died very peacefully this afternoon at 2:30.  The thing that Dad loved most in this world was Mom.  He has struggled and missed her every moment since she died seven years ago. He has also been so afraid to die. So afraid of the process of dying. We are very grateful to FairHope Hospice and the staff of Pickering House who made him so very comfortable so that he could go be with Mom without fear and suffering. We are also grateful for you, your thoughts, prayers, and words of comfort.

Due to COVID, we aren’t planning a service at this time, and hope to have a Memorial Service in the Spring.  Please take COVID seriously.  Please wear a mask.  Please wash your hands.  Please practice safe distancing.

Thanks again for your support.  As we look back and try to catch our breath, we will read your words and take comfort in your care and your memories of Mom and Dad.
