Jim was born in December of 1963 to James and Saundra Lanning. Jim was the oldest of 11 children. He attended  St. John Francis Regis School and graduated in 1982 from Archbishop O' Hara High School. Jim followed in the footsteps of his father by joining the Pipefitters UA Local 533 in 1985. Jim was dedicated to his career, and he served 37 years in his field. Jim was also a Papa to 11 grandchildren.

Jim was an avid sports fan. He spent many years coaching his sons and brothers in football and baseball. He was a Chiefs season ticket holder for over 30 years, and he took several trips to Arizona to watch the Royals at spring training. Jim and Teri's favorite place to spend time together was in Destin, Florida. Jim loved cars and working with his hands. He could build or fix just about anything. Most recently, Jim enjoyed watching his grandchildren play in his backyard pool. He was known for having a contagious smile, great sense of humor, and an incredibly generous heart.

Jim is preceded in death by his sister, Lisa Steiner, father-in-law Mike LaFoe, and granddaughter, Gracie Lanning. He is survived by his wife, Teri; parents, James and Saundra Lanning; mother-in-law, Elaine LaFoe; children, Mitchell Lanning (Braylynn), Justin Lanning (Ashley); Kaleb Lanning (Andrea), and Kylie Lanning (Chris); stepchildren, Krista Vetter (Corey), Derek Landrum-Vetter (Jason), Taylor Holler (Brad), and Ali Holler (Justin); siblings, John Lanning (Lindsay), Catherine Caywood (John), Kim Dew (Darin), Patrick Lanning (Tara), Bridget Kratofil (Steven), Christen Dusselier (Bob), Mary Werner (Chad), William Lanning, and Brian Lanning (Tracey); as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
