Jason’s Story

Site created on May 29, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
On Sunday May 12th,  Jason was complaining of stomach pain, was sweating profusely, and was a poor color. I brought him into the emergency room and they admitted him to the hospital. On Monday May 13th he was rushed to the ICU as they were unable to care for him at the hospital level. The oxygen concentration in his blood was so low they needed to intubate him and get him on a ventilator to breathe for him. They informed me that he was in acute respiratory failure and acute kidney failure. His pancreas had released so many enzymes and toxins into his body, that it affected his kidneys and lungs. I asked his doctors how serious his condition was and he told me that I needed to call his family because he was in extreme critical condition. He did well for approximately two days on the ventilator and they had also started dialysis. They were talking about possibly waking him up later that week and taking him off the ventilator. This was short-lived as they had to turn his ventilator settings back to high, and do a slower form of dialysis as he was not tolerating "regular" dialysis.
Since this time, he has continued to have complications, including  blood clots in both of his legs, both of his arms, and the port near his neck as well.  May 29th he started having tremors and they are looking to do a CT scan on his brain to see what those are being caused by. He's received two blood transfusions and after being on Heparin for the blood clots, they discovered he had developed what they called Hit, which is an allergy to Heparin . They have since switched his anticoagulant. He is somewhat stable, however still currently in critical condition. As people that believe in the power of prayer, we would like you all to pray for his recovery and health.
As we have a large family and a huge number of friends and co-workers, I found it easier to just create this CaringBridge so I was not inundated with texts, phone calls and messages ( even though I appreciate every last one of them) I will keep this updated daily, so you know what's going on. If I know it you will know it! Thank you all!!

Journal entry by Jodi Halvorson

Hello everyone! I wanted to share that Jason's doing very very well, is able to be alone and drive, so I'll be headed back to work on Monday, lucky for him! We went to Costco this morning and brought some treats to the nurses at the North Memorial ICU along with a thank you card. The look on their faces when they realized who he was was just so fun. Right when we walked in, one of them recognized me, and smiled a big smile and said, "Hi how are you?" and then kind of looked at Jason,  wondering if he needed some help or something, and then looked at me,and back at him, when I said, "Jason just wanted to come in and thank you all personally for saving his life." She practically flew out of her chair, her face got beet red, and she started calling for the other nurses to come look and see who it was,  it was so fun! A couple of nurses said they couldn't believe he was walking and talking with them, and said it was so considerate of him to come in because they never know what happens to their patients when they discharge. My only disappointment was that his doctor that was so good and wonderful wasn't there for us to talk with and show Jason's progress to.
We then headed up to Regency do the same thing and of all people behind the nurses desk there was his Dr.! He was so happy to see Jason and told him that his recovery has been amazing and he doesn't usually see progress this quick from people as sick as Jason was. Overall it was such a great thing for all of us. Never underestimate the power of a thank you!
