James’s Story

Site created on January 25, 2022

Our sweet 4 year old James was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on January 22, 2022.   A normal level of white blood cells should be between 8k-12k, but when we got admitted into Texas Childrens--James was at 350k.  We've learned that we'll have 8-9 months of weekly chemo treatments, followed by another two years of monthly chemo treatments.  T-cell is of course one of the rarer types of Leukemia, with acute meaning it comes on fast.  James is also special in that he apparently has the rarest blood type as well:  AB-.  But thankfully, we've been told that this is a CURABLE disease and we've had so many reach out to donate blood and platelets for him!  We are putting James in God's hands and we know that he has so much more life and smiles to give.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Katie Whisler

Happy Spring Break! And happy LAST SPINAL TAP DAY!!! Today marks the start of his last cycle of treatment, with it finishing the beginning of June. His ANC came back at almost 4000, so even his body is ready to start this last cycle strong! This last cycle will have three chemos through his port, three breathing treatments, and daily at home oral chemo like usual. It’s going to be so fun celebrating all these “last” things!

So once he’s done in June, he’ll have to come back for monthly lab checks for the first year. He’ll also have a breathing treatment at those labs appointments for the first six months. After the first year, then the checkups start spreading out to two months, three months, six months, etc. So they’ll still be seeing us but less frequently than every two weeks like we are right now. But in a way, it would probably feel weird to stop coming cold turkey…we’ve actually made friends with most of his nurses and doctors, especially our favorite Ms. Macey! 🤣

Speaking of child life, be on the lookout for your absolute favorite Texas Children’s toy drive, “Games from James,” coming your way soon!! We’re thinking of lining it up with his end of treatment so we can have a bell ringing/toy drive finale extravaganza! We mentioned to Ms. Macey today that we planned to do “Games from James” again and she was thrilled!! She’s going to start putting together a list of their most needed/desired items so that I can make our Amazon wishlist like we’ve done the last two years. Super excited!! I’ll send an update once we have everything all lined up!

Thanks for all the prayers and support over this entire experience! Added a picture of him living his best life as a little leaguer!
