Iris’s fever spiked again around 2 AM. She was also in a lot of pain. They are treated with Tylenol and an extra bump of Morphine. So far none of the tests or cultures have returned any positive results other than the same cold virus she always tests positive for. So most likely the fever is due to neutropenia, very low ANC (white count). The pain is from the mucositis (inflammation of the mucus glands), which is also caused in part by neutropenia. The doctor said this is still in the normal range and everything should begin to resolve as the transplant engrafts and her counts start to rise.
