Heather’s Story

Site created on February 17, 2017

Thank you for visiting Heather's Caring Bridge. I will need to get all of the facts straight but this is the jist of Heather's illness.  She has been ill since the beginning of January with a variety of different ailments. 2 sinus infections, strep and what Heather thought were seasonal allergies.  On Monday February 13th, Kinch took Heather to the ER at Scott & White, Round Rock where they drew blood and broke the heart wrenching news that Heather most likely has Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  Scott & White is not outfitted with the resources for the type of aggressive treatment that Heather has begun.  After discussions of Life Flight services to other Scott and White facilities, the decision was made to move her to Seton Central on 38th St. in Austin.  Since Heather has arrived at Seton she has begun oral chemotherapy as well as a very intense 7 day regimen of Induction Chemotherapy which is given to her through a port a cath that was placed in her chest on Wednesday.  Heather also has had her first Bone Marrow Biopsy and is waiting for the final pathology of that.  The type of Chemo that Heather will receive over the next several days is the beast of all beasts and will keep her hospitalized for at least 30 days. Her immune system will be suppressed and it will take close monitoring and time to be able to fight off a simple common cold.  For now, these are the facts that have been shared.   Heather is strong and understands she is at war with the beast and she has just the right amount of hutspa to take it on! She is in good spirits and has her amazing family by her side and in their prayers.  Heather is very special to so many of us.  I hope to have updates on her progress  and most importantly to gather support and prayers for her and her family while they navigate this life changing time in their lives.   I have started a Care calendar if you would like to help support the Meyer family. You can find the calendar under the "ways to help" tab .  Thank you all.

Journal entry by Kinch Meyer

Heathers Post: 6 months since transplant...wow. Monday we received the news that the chimerism test shows 100% donor across the board, Dr. R was pulling these results up right in the exam room so there’s the lovely long pause where you hold your breath and wait for the computer. His face lit up as he saw the results and said “Excellent!”. This word has a million times more meaning coming from this guy!! He’s super close to kicking me out of his clinic and back in Dr. Helmer’s hands. I’ll gladly give up my spot at the transplant clinic! My overall health is good, still receiving the chemo shot every month which keeps me from eating a lot all at once and still tired every once in a while where I just have to nap. Labs aren’t perfect yet but good enough to keep us happy. I stop the prograf next week (this is huge) along with some supplements I had to take that go with the prograf and this will leave me with only one prescription left, the antiviral. Huge! Huge! Huge! We will just pray that no chronic GVHD shows up but I have high hopes:).

I met a man this week in the waiting room that had just spent his first night at home after being in the hospital for a month. He still had that look in his eyes of “what in the hell just happened to me”. It’s made me realize I need to get into a support group because I just wanted to hold his hand and let him be afraid but not alone. That’s next on my agenda for sure. Thank you all for keeping up with me and my family, I think of your support daily. We are all still recovering from this ourselves but will always be grateful for YOU and your precious prayers.

My prayer request right now are for those unceasing caregivers who are dealt this heavy blow, sometimes more than once, and also to the patients in Austin right now in hospitals who have no running water due to the floods.

God Bless.
