Granger’s Story

Site created on July 19, 2022

Granger Peterson, the infant son of Jameson & Lauren (Rusert)Peterson, was born on April 6th, 2022.

One week after birth he was diagnosed with SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency). SCID is a serious immunodeficiency disease in which Granger has no T-cells. T-cells help to protect the body from infection, without them Granger is extremely susceptible to infection and unable to fight it. SCID is fatal within the first years of life without treatment. Treatment includes a bone marrow transplant. Since Granger was 1 month old, he has been taking medication to prevent infection. He has also been receiving IV Immunoglobulin treatment (IVIG). IVIG is a therapy used to treat antibody deficiencies, he has been receiving this treatment every 28 days in Madison, WI.

Granger will be receiving chemotherapy beginning on 7/19/22 and will have a bone marrow transplant on 7/28/22. He will be receiving the chemotherapy daily until the day prior to the bone marrow transplant. He will be hospitalized in Madison, WI for a minimum of 6 weeks, potentially longer based on how things go. The Peterson family will be required to stay in Madison for 2-4 weeks following hospital discharge for close follow up & monitoring.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kari Rusert

We got some great news yesterday, Granger’s numbers are starting to come up! A few days earlier than expected, so that is wonderful. He was day 13 post transplant.

However, he Spiked a fever at 1am today, then was 100.8 then went 101. Granger was given Tylenol. Then it was 103. Drew blood cultures and will start antibiotics. They said every transplant patient gets a fever. They were surprised that he held out this long. Explains his breathing situation earlier. This am it’s 99.6!

He has a lot of mucous built up (which is normal) and they had to give him a nebulizer and that seemed to help his breathing a lot! All x-rays were good of his chest.

As of right now his fever is better, think it broke because he’s all sweaty/clammy. His heart rates more normal. He sure is a trooper! Drank two bottles already tho! A True Champ
