Patricia’s Story

Site created on March 21, 2021

On Wednesday, March 17th Pat had a very bad stroke. Luckily granddaughter (and guardian angel) Courtney stopped by her house and took quick action to get her to the hospital. It turns out a blood clot traveled from her heart to her brain, but because of Courtney’s quick action, doctors were able to administer a drug which broke up the blood clot and saved her life.

She spent two days in the ICU and then was transferred to an inpatient intense therapy unit  at Regions hospital where she still is today. She has already made INCREDIBLE progress and we are optimistic she will fully recover in no time!  If you know Pat, or to me, Grammie Mac, then you know that she is incredibly strong and stubborn - two traits that will likely come in very handy in her recovery.

Throughout her life, Grammie has touched so many people; our family hopes that this site can serve as a place for the most recent updates on her progress, and also a place where you can voice your support for her and become a virtual cheerleader for Grammie Mac!

Journal entry by Hannah McDonald

This morning at 8:05 AM, “Patty” W. McDonald completed her end of life journey. Her daughter Julie and granddaughter Cera were with her at the time and said that her passing was very peaceful. All 4 of her children gathered together to say their final goodbyes, along with 2 spouses and long-time friend Ben. She had planned for this moment a long time ago and had a pre-paid contract with the Cremation Society of Minnesota. She is now in their capable hands. Her family stayed in her apartment after she had left and shared tears and fond memories. There will be a celebration of life at Como Park next summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the University of Minnesota Bee Research Lab or HealthPartners Hospice program. She is survived by 4 children, Brian, Shawn, Philip, Julie, younger sister Audrey, 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, longtime friends Ben and Ruth, and her loving feline companions “Annie” and “Handsome Harold". 💜
