Gary’s Story

Site created on January 22, 2024

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support, prayers, and words of encouragement. Gary has been having recurrent diverticulitis infections in his sigmoid colon (large intestine), but only about once or twice a year for the past 5 years. However. since July of this year, he has had recurrent bouts of infections in one area of his sigmoid in particular, which means it was likely diseased beyond the ability to work properly any longer. The best course of treatment was to remove that part of his sigmoid colon and approx 10" were removed Jan 9th. Initially, his surgery and post-op were going as expected. However, he developed an infection and is now back in the hospital.

We made it home ok Tuesday afternoon.  Gary doesn't sleep for too long at a time yet, because of some pain and discomfort with his colostomy site, especially if he's moving around in his sleep.  It's healing though, so that should improve quite a lot as time goes on.

He has a followup appointment next Wednesday in Sioux Falls, so we should learn then more about when he can go back to work, thinking 4-6 weeks.  The hope is to have the ostomy reversed with another surgery in approximately 3 months.

For now, we are thankful to be home, grateful for all the support and blessed by all your thoughts and prayers!
