Garrison’s Story

Site created on October 4, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We'd like to use Caring Bridge to keep family and friends updated in one place. After suffering from a lingering cough, Garrison saw his Dr and had a chest X-ray that produced some concern. This resulted in further testing. Later CT and PET scans showed a 13cm mass in his right lung area that had spread into his heart as well. After multiple biopsies we learned that he has Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma, Nodular Sclerosis type.
Garrison is determined to remain positive and put up a good fight against this cancer. He is in the excellent care of the Scripps hospital team and they are working swiftly to provide treatment. We ask that you keep him in prayer and we appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Stay tuned to this website and “follow” this page in order to receive updates in your email.  We will also post tangible ways that you can help the family at this time. Keep in mind that tribute donations to caring bridge go to support the website, not the family directly. Thank you.

Journal entry by Jenifer Zoutendyk

I hope you are all staying safe, well and sane during this time of social distancing.

Garr had a PET-CT scan and blood work done on Friday, and today he had a visit with Dr Banerjee to review his results. His scan showed no cancer activity! He still has some remaining fibrous scar tissue in his chest, but it is benign. Hopefully it will continue to break down and be absorbed by his body.
This is the great news that we have been waiting for! After 6 months of having chemo every two weeks, it is finished - over - done!
Because of the size of his tumor, radiation treatment is usually given after chemo as a preventative measure. However, because of the location of his tumor and his young age, radiation could do long term damage to his lungs and heart. Dr. Banerjee is recommending he not do radiation, and Garrison is in agreement. However, he plans on seeking a second opinion with an oncology radiologist before making a final decision.
He will continue to see his oncologist for regular check ups every few months for the next 5 years. His focus now is on exercising and getting his strength back, and giving his body the rest and nutrition it needs to heal.
On behalf of our family, I want to sincerely thank every one of you who have supported Garrison, and us, with your acts of kindness and prayers. It's been a rough 7 months, but he's at the finish line, and it feels wonderful. We are celebrating tonight!
Much Love,
Jen
