Galen’s Story

Site created on December 31, 2023

On Saturday, December 30, 2023 Galen experienced a massive ischemic stroke in his home. He is at Lancaster General Hospital and was in the ICU for a week. However, He is currently in the neuro step down unit.

Medically, his condition is very serious. BUT…we believe JESUS is bigger than any medical condition. We know  our God is present, faithful and He is a God of MIRACLES! Because of our deep trust in Jesus, we are believing in total healing and restoration of Galen’s body.

Those of you who know Galen, know what an amazing man he is. So, let’s love on him as much as we can during this time. As his family, we humbly ask for your fervent prayers, along with believing with us that Galen will be completely healed.

We’ll try our best to update you as much as we can on a daily basis. Thank you so much for all your love and support!

Love,
Galen’s Family

Journal entry by Vern Smoker

Galens youngest sister Grace and her hubby Graham live an hour away and came to see us while we were in Fla

Galen’s family is made up of 10 kids and he is third from the top.

His mom and Dad both lived a good long life and made their entry to their heavenly home when they were both in their mid 90’s. Longevity runs in the family. 🙏

So…when family is in town it’s a real treat.

Especially while we are in Fla.

Pizza on the patio and a few rounds of the card game, Golf.

Therapy can come in so many different forms and playing golf is just another way to engage and stimulate the brain.

Playing cards or other games require you to think strategically, analyze situations, and make quick decisions. The constant need to evaluate and reassessthe game keeps the brain engaged and active. It can also improve cognitive skills, such as problem-solving and critical thinking.

Plus it also takes the monotony out of… when he hears me say…”ok Hon, time to do therapy”. 🥰😏

Instead…Why not just another round of golf?

Galen is making great progress in his speech. Every new word, every sentence is a reason to celebrate.  Tonight we were with friends at the local coffee shop (postal 98) and I saw much improvement from a month ago when we first arrived in Fla.

To watch him actually join in the conversation is so encouraging. Not every word is clear but enough are that he can say what’s on his mind and we can understand.  It’s only a matter of time and he will be speaking  fluently.

A gal who believes in miracles…

  Vern
