Everett’s Story

Site created on September 6, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.

Following a few weeks of minor swelling of his face and what doctors initially thought was sports asthma, Everett's face and lymph nodes significantly swelled up in just a few days which raised concern for Jeff and Angela. The day after Labor Day, the Shojis headed into primary care where they were soon referred to OHSU Doernbecher. Within a matter of hours the doctors diagnosed him with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. More information can be found here: https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/acute-lymphocytic-leukemia/about/what-is-all.html

It's been a whirlwind for the family and friends as everyone processes this information that feels out of the blue. Everett is starting his fight and we're all confident in his strength to fight this thing. But it will not be an easy journey and will require his full community to cheer for and rally around him (and Jeff and Angela).

Newest Update

Journal entry by Barbara Mathews

We were released from the hospital last Sunday and Everett has been getting better as the week progresses. His mouth sores are finally healed, he’s eating again and craving all sorts of random things. We went in this morning to check his ANC counts to see if treatment will resume again on Monday. While they’ve improved since we left the hospital last weekend, they’re just shy of starting treatment so his doctor is allowing him another week off to heal before they blast him again with his last round of chemo this phase. He’s scheduled to resume on May 6th. We will keep you all posted with updates as we get them. He continues to be strong and kicking cancers ass!
