Esther’s Story

Site created on September 12, 2018

In September 2018 we began a journey we never dreamed we'd have to face when we received the unexpected news that Esther has a form of bone marrow cancer. In the days that followed tests confirmed cancer but also confused the original diagnosis. The final diagnosis has come back as a particularly aggressive form of multiple myeloma called plasmablastic myeloma. The road ahead is not clear and we don't know where it will take Esther and the rest of us and while this has come as a shock to us, we have a God who is neither surprised nor has ceased to be good. We cling to these hopes as we move forward and we cherish every person walking alongside us in prayer and encouragement.

We are using the Caring Bridges site as a way to keep friends and family informed throughout the journey God has us on. It is a non-profit organization and we are not looking for donations to be made to us or to this site.

Bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2)

We would like to collect letters for Mom to give her during her hospital stays and when she is needing a little extra encouragement. We would love it if you would write a her a letter or note of encouragement that we can pass on to her. If you are sending it by mail please send it to the following address:
4730 50st
Olds, AB
T4H 1E4
If you are local you can give it personally to Trevor, Missy, Mandy, Sarah, or Mitch to pass on to her.

We are thankful for all of the words and notes of encouragement we have already received and for so many of you faithfully praying for us.

Thank you!

Journal entry by Trevor Kary

On March 7, surrounded by her husband and children, Esther Kary went home to be with her Lord and Saviour at the age of 58 years. Esther was born to Erwin and Rose Giebler on September 12, 1961 in Kelowna, BC. She spent most of her young years there until moving to Olds for grade 12. In the years following, Esther attended Bible school in Edmonton at North American Baptist College and then went on to complete her medical secretary certificate from Okanagan College before returning again to the Olds area. On October 27, 1984 Esther married Trevor Kary and together they farmed and raised their four children settling northwest of Olds for the next 35 years. In all her years, though they seemed much too short to those left behind, Esther loved deeply, served graciously, shared her home with those in need, prayed faithfully, walked humbly with her God, suffered patiently through a difficult cancer diagnoses, and died well and now has received everything that was promised her in Christ.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:7-9)

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Trevor and her children Michael and Melissa Lorusso, John and Mandy Adams, Matt and Sarah Priddle, and Mitch Kary and her seven grandchildren as well so many family and friends.

A celebration of Esther’s life will be held at Olds First Baptist Church on Friday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Olds First Baptist Church - Seminary Scholarship Fund (5005 53rd Ave, Olds AB T4H 1H6) or Olds and District Hospice Society.

The family is especially thankful for Dr. Clarence Graff, Dr. Leoni Kelly, Dr. Jaco Hoffman, the nursing staff at Olds Hospital, the exceptional care at Tom Baker Cancer Center and Olds and District Hospice. As well we thank our extended family, our church family at Olds First Baptist, and the local support of many friends within the community.
