Essie’s Story

Site created on October 11, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated. Essie began showing symptoms of COVID-19 on Tuesday Oct. 6* . She was up all night coughing and did not go to work on Wednesday. Instead she went to the doctor's office to get tested. It would be two days before she knew the results. By Thursday, she was in bad shape, and she went to Urgent Care for a rapid test with hopes of getting some cough syrup and antibiotics. By Friday morning, thanks to the determination and insistence of her daughter and son-in-law, her friend Victoria and her nephew Paul, she agreed to call 911 and head to the hospital.  The hospital was already at capacity with COVID patients, so Essie was in the ER until Sunday afternoon. Then she was moved to the ICU, into a special COVID unit.  Essie lives with COPD, a respiratory illness that causes scarring in the lungs. This complicates her experience of COVID. She was diagnosed with pneumonia in the ER.

[*If you were exposed, PLEASE consider getting tested or quarantine yourself to slow the spread of this dangerous virus and to protect the community.]

If you know Essie, you know that she is strong, tough and faithful. While she is fighting this battle please pray for her strength to remain, and for the ability to advocate for herself as she remains in isolation. She is fitted with a full-face mask that delivers supplemental oxygen to her nonstop, so it is difficult or impossible for her to talk on the phone or read and respond to text messages--though she wants to respond to every one. It is probably best to communicate with her through this site until she is better able to communicate and breathe.

Thank you for your prayers in this unpredictable journey! Essie appreciates them more than we will ever know! She is so grateful for the prayers from her friends at Eagle Heights Baptist Church and her sweet family members. She loves you all.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Donna Hatasaki

Good morning friends and family. First, I need to ask, did one of you send us a beautiful money tree? We received one at our home, but there was no name attached to it, and we would like to personally thank you.

Second, some of you have asked how to give a memorial gift in Mom's honor to Young Life online. You can go to giving.younglife.org/thegoodway and give through that link. It will take you to account 1159, the Spiritual Formation account.

Finally, an update on my mom and her home. We signed with a realtor in Harrison on Tuesday last week, Ryan Caughron. (We highly recommend him, if you are looking for a realtor in Boone County.) By Friday, we had four offers on Mom's house, two for over asking price. Yesterday, the new owner moved into Mom's house. I keep looking at the calendar to make sure I am getting this right, but this means Mom's house has a new owner two weeks after Mom graduated to glory. We find this all hard to believe, but I also think my mom would be very proud and glad. She worked so hard to make her house into a lovely home, and it became a treasure that reflected her spirit, vision and hard work.  She was the best version of that Proverbs 31 woman, and now she truly "can laugh at the days to come." We "honor her for all that her hands have done" and may "her works bring her praise" at the gates of the city where she now lives.

Yesterday was the first day in a month that Grant and I were able to have real rest. We are grateful. As we watch the presidential election continue to play out, our prayer is that the citizens of this country would begin to see one another as neighbors and friends instead of enemies and strangers. This is the heart of Jesus, that we would see in one another his image and treat one another with dignity, respect and honor--regardless of political parties or any other kind of label or affiliation.  His kingdom is not of this world. May we begin to see more clearly the reality my mother now knows full well.

God bless you each this day.
