Eric’s Story

Site created on August 26, 2020

Eric was diagnosed with AML (Leukemia) on August 10, 2020 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

He started chemo on Aug 12.

After the first treatment, his white blood cell count went from 140,000 to 8,000. So far the induction round of chemo is going well. He is undergoing genetic and bone marrow tests to determine the best course of treatment at Chaing Mai University hospital.

More details will follow. Please pray!

Journal entry by Melissa Alness

Hi Friends!

I was released from the hospital late Friday. Sooner than expected!😊 I’m thankful to be home with Melissa and the kids. I go in for outpatient appointments every other day now to get my blood checked, and for transfusions as needed. I just finished my second outpatient appointment with a transfusion of platelets. We’re keeping my platelet threshold higher than normal as I think I’ve had a little retinal bleeding.
My body is doing much better with transfusions so far. I’ve had three transfusions of platelets, but only one of red blood cells. Those have been holding steady for the last week - since my initial transfusion. I’ve been getting a good bump from my platelet transfusions too. This has been a surprise to me. I’m thankful. Thank you for all your prayers about this.

I finished my last dose of chemo for this first round tonight. I have a bone marrow biopsy scheduled for May 13. We should get results by May 2p]This will show us if the chemo has put me into remission. That’s my biggest request, and that I continue to remain infection free. Otherwise, I’ve been handling this much better than the standard treatment. I’m really thankful for that. Thank you for praying.

I just talked to my main doctor. Since this is a relapse, and since there has been a further genetic mutation along with the leukemia relapse, the only real way forward is to do a bone marrow transplant. It sounds like there are already potential matches sourced. They’re following up to find a donor match. We’ll get more info at my appointment on the 20th. That’s also when I’ll be admitted again for the next round of chemo.
