Emma Duke’s Story

Site created on April 24, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we share difficult news about our precious daughter, Emma Duke.  She has been recently diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma - Stage 1 : Group III. We know this news may come as a shock and wanted to provide a centralized space to communicate with friends and family dear to us.  As you can imagine, receiving this diagnosis has been incredibly challenging for our family.

While the diagnosis is daunting, we are committed to doing everything in our power to support our daughter through this journey.  During this time, we kindly ask for your prayers, understanding and support.  We want to extend our deepest gratitude to those who have already reached out with words of encouragement and offers to help.  Your kindness has touched our hearts in ways we cannot fully express.  Your love and kindness will be a source of strength for us as we navigate this challenging chapter in our lives.

As we embark on this journey, we will keep you updated on our daughter's progress.  We believe in the power of God, our community and know that with your unwavering support, we can help our daughter overcome this.

Thank you for being a part of our lives and for standing by us during this difficult time. 🎗️💛🎗️

Journal entry by Campbell Cartledge Bleke

It’s been another eventful, long week on our journey.

Emma Duke had her second round of chemo on Monday here in Philly {She’s doing very well as far as side effects go}. We met with a great Ophthalmologist who said 'I'm here to be a cheerleader.' Her vision in the 'sick' eye isn't 20/20 anymore, but they want to continue to give it time for it to heal before glasses.

Tuesday evening we had another emergency room visit because of a fever {still due to the virus from this past weekend}. The trip ultimately turned into a two night stay because CHOPs policy is that oncology patients with a fever have a mandatory overnight stay with antibiotics. Emma Duke went on her first ambulance ride from the smaller CHOP hospital to the main one. She loved it! We settled in at about 3AM.

On Wednesday we met with a nutritionist who has really helped with her appetite by giving us medicine to assist with her hunger. We ended up spending another night in the hospital {double checking her PICC line wasn't infected} and have been resting at the carriage house since we were discharged on Thursday mid morning.

Today was HARD for me {not her} as her hair is falling out quickly...🥺

SO tomorrow, we {Duke, myself and Emma Duke} will head to NYC to pick out a look-a-like American Girl and see to her Godmother Mallory. {Emma Duke's been walking around the carriage house singing 'Welcome to New York' - Taylor Swift}. Don't worry, the doctors said this was the perfect time to ENJOY as her numbers are trending well.

The next plans are for Emma Duke to have a small chemo Monday then get her PICC line removed {YEAA 🙌🏼}. Tuesday, we will fly home to be with her brothers, swim, and play with friends.

We cannot express the love we have felt from our #EmmaDukeStrong community. From the sporting of her bracelets {thank you, Raybon's} at Brookstone's Baseball State playoffs to Miracle Riders to meals offered to gift cards to happy entertaining presents to Michael's parents and friends watching Bo and George to Bo Bartlett & Sallie Martin setting up a home away from home - we feel the love and couldn't do this without each and every one of you. ❤️

Please send prayers that everything goes as planned and that she is able to have a week of normalcy. Continued prayers for strength for us 🎗️💛🎗️
