Emily’s Story

Site created on January 21, 2020

Emily passed away, at home in her own bed, surround by friends and family, on the afternoon of October 14.

We are grieving but also grateful for her life.

I am continuing to post occasional pieces in Em’s journal in her memory.

I will also be posting news about memorials next summer, and  about the Emily Gaynor Rothman Fund for Dance, which we hope will be able to accept donations as soon as Christmas.

Thanks to everyone reading this for your love and support.

UPDATE: Dave here -- As of Sunday, 3/15, I'm now back in CB with Emily and Noah, while Jacob is in Chicago waiting out the epidemic.

Here's some background information for those of you who are just learning about what has happened to Em since Jan 3rd.

Em has been receiving immunotherapy treatment for melanoma that was discovered several years ago. On Jan 3rd, Em blacked out while driving, grazed another car and drove off the road.

As a result of the accident, she suffered compression fractures in her L4 and L5 vertebrae that will require her to be in a brace for at least several months.

In trying to determine the cause of her black out,  an MRI showed melanoma lesions in her brain that likely caused a seizure while she was driving  -  "numerous bilateral supra and infratentorial metasteses." It was determined that as soon as she was able to tolerate it and it was safe to move her, the best course of treatment would be to undergo SRS (stereotactic radio surgery), preferably gamma knife radiation. Em has been tough and courageous and has made enormous progress with her mobility.

On Jan 16, Em was successfully moved to UCH, Anschutz in Denver, where on Monday, 1/20, she received the first of possibly 3 SRS treatments.

News of the next steps and her progress will continue below.

Please send Em "Well Wishes" or comment on posts so that when she checks in, she'll feel the love and care being sent in her direction.

Journal entry by David Rothman

Hello all —

I recently received the Zoom capture video of Em’s October service, to which I am attaching a link here. The video quality is not high, but gives you a good idea of it all. I believe I have modified the link-sharing protocols so that you can share this link with anyone. It is a very large file, but I was able to download it — otherwise you have to view it through the viewer here:

In other news — I have had some conversations with the Community Foundation and we have agreed that the first stage of vesting Em’s fund is done. We are at about 51k for the permanent fund, which means it formally vests, and at current returns would generate about $2,500/yr. As we have more than 10k in the spendable fund, this means that there is more than enough (at 2.5k/yr) to cover the three-year gap until the permanent fund vests, with funds even left over that can be spent or be rolled into that fund at the end off the three-year period. This phase of this project is complete. Of course, we can always add more to the fund, and I hope people will do that over time, but the very good news is that we can now begin to put the generosity of all the donors to good use in bringing more ballet and modern dance to the Center, and in creating increased opportunities for ballet and modern education in CB, all under Em’s name. Thanks again, from the bottom of my heart.

As always, the boys and I are deeply grateful to all of you for your support of Emily's legacy and of our family.
