Drew’s Story

Site created on July 25, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We so appreciate your thoughts and prayers for Drew during this time. Thank you for visiting!

On June 29, Drew was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). He was immediately admitted into the MUSC Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit. During the first few days, Drew went through a battery of tests, scans, and a bone marrow biopsy.

Since that time, Drew had a PICC line put in and has been receiving a number of medications: antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals which are all cautionary and are helping his compromised immune system fight off any infections and viruses that could otherwise complicate his battle with cancer. At the same time he's been getting blood and platelet transfusions as needed to keep all of his "blood" numbers (platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells) at safe levels.

On July 3rd, Drew started a 28 day cycle of an intensive chemotherapy regimen.  Depending on how his body reacts, he should be in a place where his cancer is in remission by the end of this cycle and his team will determine further course of treatment including outpatient chemotherapy with the goal of a full cure.

So many people have asked how they can help. For those willing and able, a blood or platelet donation made in Drew’s name at any Blood Connection location would benefit Drew and our community.

Journal entry by Mary Carol Butterfield

On July 6, Drew completed two years and seven days of treatment with his final lumbar puncture and bone marrow biopsy. With praise and thanksgiving, we can share his bone marrow showed no signs of leukemia!

We are so grateful to all of you for your prayers, texts, cards, and support. We were blessed with fantastic teams at MUSC and Prisma Pediatric Hematology Oncology inpatient/clinic and PICU who were not only caregivers but friends. Faith in God’s healing mercies carried Drew and our family through this season of his life.

In May, Drew adopted a golden retriever puppy named Miller. In June, he accepted an audit staff position with RSM, an international public accounting firm. Saturday, Drew and Miller moved into an apartment in Charlotte to get settled before Drew starts work in late August.

He will continue to take oral chemotherapy for the next 5 years with monthly blood checks. We appreciate your continued prayers for his healing as he starts this new chapter.
