Mom woke up with “the worst headache of her life” on Friday morning. We called EMS and she was brought to Mercy hospital where a CT scan showed that she had a small bleed from a ruptured brain aneurysm. She was stable with just a really bad headache.

She was transported to Abbott northwestern to the neuro ICU Friday morning. Dr Kayan recommended she have a procedure done where they use an artery in the leg to lead a wire up into the brain (less invasive approach) and place a coil where the ruptured aneurysm was. The coil is meant to prevent that area from rupturing again (which is likely to happen soon after the original rupture).

The procedure was completed and she was transferred to PACU.  I wish I could end this story here but....

Unfortunately when she started to wake up they noticed she could not move her left side. They brought her back for another CT which showed that the coil they placed to prevent another bleed had actually come out of place and the site did ruptured again. She had a little more bleeding the second time and was left with no movement in her left side. They brought her back to attempt the same procedure again. The second procedure was successful and she was transferred back to the PACU to recover.

Journal entry by Kelsey Lacoursiere

Mom was moved from the neuro unit at Abbott and into inpatient rehab Courage Kenney located at Abbott.

This is where she will spend the next 3-4 weeks working hard with physical and occupational therapy to gain back her strength and transition her into her new normal. They will be working 3-4 hours a day with therapies so this should be great.

Although we are excited for her to start this journey and see her get back to a more normal life there are some downfalls for mom. Abbott was allowing one visitor per day during visiting hours. Courage Kenney is a little more strict and only allows one visitor for her entire 3-4 week stay. This means only one family member will get to be present to support her through this journey. The rest of us will have to be cheering her on from afar. Although we are all pretty bummed about this, the social worker has assured us that they will be keeping her very busy to make sure she can reach her goals as fast as possible.

She now has a phone in her room to be able to talk on the phone as she pleases and we will also be sending a lab top there so we can set up zoom/Skype calls so she can still get to see her grand babies and other family while she is there. If anyone is interested reach out to one of her daughters (myself, Ashley, daylynn, gracie) and we can help coordinate getting a video call set up for her.

as always, thanks for the continued love and support. Although she’s not been able to thank everyone herself. She appreciates it!
