Donald’s Story

As most of you know Don contracted shingles in July of last year and a trajectory of his Alzheimer’s has progressed to a diagnosis of severe. During several hospital visits in December I was told that he would continue to have problems. My explanation is his brain no longer can take care of his body and tell it what to do . Unfortunately our latest chapter included a stroke on February 18, 2020. Due to the fast action of our caregiver, myself and Marin general he was rushed to UCSF and underwent a procedure to literally suck the blood clot from his brain. It was successful and a temporary paralysis he suffered on the right side went away. It is hard for us or the doctors to discern if his speech problems are related to the stroke or Alzheimer’s. Every day something new happens and today I arrived at the hospital to find his room quarantined. He demonstrated flu like symptoms overnight.  We are waiting for tests to come back. I hesitate to go into prognosis right now. Those of you who do you know know that I get very upset when you ask a lot of questions. I know they are well-intented but often they force my brain to go to the Darkside. Kim and I are both here for him and our maintaining as best we can thank you for your caring. I will update When I feel it is appropriate. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Marilyn Weyant

Don passed away last night at 11:30.  He was home in his own bed with me and his dog beside him. I accepted the inevitable earlier in the week when I made plans for his scattering place where I will eventually join him.  It is not far from where we lived and overlooks the bay.https://www.fernwood.com/cremation-services-san-francisco-bay-area
