Dawn’s Story

Site created on June 15, 2018

Dawn has had symptoms since late April. At first it was just dizziness and anxiety, which we assumed were due to maybe an ear infection or something similar and stress.  But by mid May we began seeking help of a doctor at Fairview Hospital in Lusaka Zambia. They ran a bunch of tests. There was evidence of infection but nothing serious. We came back about 10 days later for another series of tests, including a ct scan. Other visual symptoms were now present. By the first week of June it was clear we needed more help than we could get in Zambia. We looked into seeing a neurologist in South Africa but when that didn’t happen, we decided to return to the States. We landed in St. Louis on Wednesday June 13th and went to Mercy Hospital.
After further tests to eliminate any other possibilities, the diagnosis is a terminal prion disease. She was moved to a skilled nursing facility, and is now in Hospice care.
