Dale’s Story

Site created on March 19, 2024

Thanks for checking on Dale! On their annual "snow bird" golf trip to Arizona for the month of February, Dale started feeling tired and when he was having a hard time finishing a round of golf, Kathy took him to the ER. After three long weeks, many tests, scans, prayers, and much patience, Dale's new Banner Medical Center - MD Anderson medical team in Phoenix diagnosed him with 'High Grade B cell Lymphoma'. It's a tough diagnosis, but Dale is a tough cookie.  Dale and Kathy have decided to stick with the team and undergo his initial treatment in Phoenix. They have the opportunity to transfer care to Fred Hutchison Cancer Center in WA should the timing ever feel right. Fortunately for now, they are guided by an excellent medical team, surrounded by much of Kathy's family local to Phoenix, and supported by friends back home and throughout the west. Treatment is expected to take approximately 4 - 5 months and includes six rounds of chemotherapy. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and support, it means so much to Dale, Kathy and family. We got this! #DaleStrong

Journal entry by Kathy Jurgens

Good morning!  Dale is powering through his treatment and gaining more strength.  He’s retired his walker and is now using a cane to help with balance on our walks!  He’s been making a real effort to eat and has been maintaining his weight thanks to all of the treats and meals that my family has helped with.  And we’ve been able to have a couple of visit with friends from home which did him good!

One of the issues that I haven’t shared much is in addition to Dale’s cancer diagnosis, the doctors found that Dale has some coronary blockages.  I’ve consider this one of the small blessings since it probably would have gone undetected until it became a larger issue.   While in the hospital, part of Dale’s medical team includes a cardiologist specializing in oncology.  He wanted a full picture of the blockages so yesterday Dale had a heart catheterization to determine the amount of blockage and treatment plan.  It was determined that his blockages didn’t require any stents.  We have a follow-up appointment with his oncology-cardiologist for a treatment with medication and diet.

While Dale won’t be golfing in Arizona for the annual guys trip, his doctors gave him the ok, with some cautions, to visit with them.  He’s excited  to see them next week when they’re down golfing in the sun!  And Kevin will be golfing with the group too so we’ll get a little extra time with him.  Quinn won’t be on the trip this year but Dale gets in his daily chats with him too.

So, we continue on this journey day by day towards better health.  Thank you all for your concern, encouraging words and prayers!
