Journal

We are home! We were able to come home yesterday. On Monday, the General Surgeon came in and had his NG tube removed and advanced his diet to regular as he did end up having a poop :) Sunday evening. He tolerated the diet change quite well and even had a couple more bowel movements. We were kind of hopeful we could have gone home Sunday evening, but they did want to make sure he tolerated the regular diet. On Monday he was up moving around and excited to get home. He was getting quite spicy with the staff the last 48 hours, so we knew he was ready to come home :)
He has continued to have pain but is so far manageable with Tylenol and a head pad. He does occasionally get Oxycodone, but we are trying to have him rest more first. Today we went back up to Abbott as he had to have a CT scan so they can plan for radiation which will start next week. He did AWESOME without needing sedation.
I wanted to re-cap what we know since his surgery:
1. The left kidney - which had the smallest area - was inflammation. Not quite explained, but with my own medical research, it does appear that this area COULD have turned into cancer, for this we are thankful it was removed.
2. No lymph nodes had cancer present - YAY
3. The right side - the largest and the side that "ruptured' - was cancer, but FAVORABLE histology which was what we wanted. This typically has a better prognosis - YAY again!
4. Due to the rupture - regardless of no cancer in the lymph nodes - he is considered stage 3 Wilm's Tumor.
5. Treatment plan will change some in regard to chemo, but he should be getting the same 3 medications.
6. He still requires full abdominal radiation due to the rupture. This is because chemo attacks cancer cells that have a blood flow - due to the spillage, they would not have an active blood flow.

We have the next 4 days home and then starting Monday, we will be at the clinic daily with the exception of the weekend until June 26. Monday we will see Oncology with the updated chemo regimen and an infusion. Tuesday will start radiation. He will need to be sedated for these sessions, but these only last about 10 minutes, so hopefully it will be easier on him.

For now, we are thankful to be home and that his pathology and surgery brought more uplifting news. I pray his pain starts improving, right now he walks a little hunched over and takes it slow, but I know he will bounce back. Thank you for the continued prayers and support. They are working!
