Journal

Yesterday Colton had a CT scan and MRI. Things went quite well. They gave him a medication called Versed prior to accessing his port - which calmed him down quite a bit. He was actually a little drunk like at times (which was hilarious) and I was glad he didn't have to go through the added stress of so many people in and out.

On to the BIG news! The chemotherapy has worked well enough that he is able to have surgery! The bleeding surrounding his right kidney is resolved and you can clearly see the tumor wall. It is still quite large but does seem to have decreased in size (forgot to ask for size). The tumor on his left kidney is also still present, but smaller in size as well. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5th (5 DAYS!!). We weren't sure going into this appointment if it would be next week for sure, as his labs were not the best, but they are good enough for it! The goal is a partial nephrectomy (removal of a portion of the kidney) on each side. This is to preserve as much kidney function as possible since he does have it on both sides. It will be a long surgery and the first couple days are expected to be quite rough. We pray his recovery is quick as it is so hard to see your kids down like that.

About 10-14 days after surgery, he will then start radiation (has not had this yet) for 1-2 weeks, along with chemotherapy. With them removing the tumors, they will be able to biopsy then to get the exact type of Wilms Tumors he has to appropriately treat it. Again, we are praying for the FAVORABLE histology which is the most common.

Since his last chemo, we have noticed some changed as far as more signs of muscle weakness. His cough changed and seemed very forced, and his right eye lid is drooping (I thought it was puffy, but it is droopy). So, him having a break from the Vincristine chemo will be a good thing for right now.

This weekend will be busy as we prepare ourselves and the kids for the next week or two of changes. Thankfully the girls' last day of school is Tuesday - so we will be able to ensure these last couple days of school isn't too far off from routine. We are not sure what it will look like in the coming weeks, but we know Colton is one tough cookie and likely will have plenty to say about it :) We just pray surgery goes well, recovery is smooth, and his pathology is favorable.

Thank you all for the continued love and support. We are really going to need it in the coming weeks!
