Journal entry by Mary Lucas

I spent the last several hours perusing Chuck’s personal writings among a myriad of documents. By far his work is much more inviting to read as opposed to tax information or medical documentation.  I can’t wait to have more time to think about how best to possibly share what he has written.  It is quite remarkable to say the least and I found myself in quite an emotional place.  But in my Mess was a Message in Chuck’s writings.  For the most part, he had poured into researching scripture and applying to our/his everyday walk.

But this one, this one was not written by Chuck, but it was important enough for him to keep and for me to share.

It is titled Two Wolves and it goes like this.

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.  He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good.  It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

As we close our Caring Bridge journal, I want to tell each and everyone of you, you FED us with your kindness, empathy, and love. Your words and thoughts, your intentional phone calls and messages brought us joy. And I will be forever grateful.

I am going to be ok even in the hard.  I will be returning to the states soon, firstly spending time with family in Washington and then heading to Salem to be with Molly and family and friends.  I can not wait to see you.

“May HIS peace be in your heart, and may your focus always be on Him.”  Chuck Lucas, November 2021
