Charlotte’s Story

Site created on December 13, 2023

Charlotte Grace Houlihan was born at 30 weeks on December 4, 2023 after a very complicated pregnancy. She only weighed 2 pounds 1.5 ounces and needed immediate breathing support when she was delivered. She is now receiving care in the NICU as her lungs heal and she continues to grow. Despite all her challenges, she is incredibly feisty and strong. We will be using this page to document her time in the NICU and provide updates.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Taylor Houlihan

This past Wednesday we celebrated Charlotte’s 100th day in the NICU.

Charlotte continues to grow and develop every day. She’s now over 9 lbs, loves to play, and is starting to coo. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to make much progress on her respiratory support. She is still requiring high flow oxygen at a level that makes it unsafe for her to eat by mouth. We are hoping to try to wean her again tomorrow and will see how she does. Her lung disease makes her very sensitive to these changes and the only official treatment is growth.  We are hopeful that this wean will be well tolerated. The plan is to make one wean per week until she is on a small amount of oxygen off the wall. Then we need to practice oral feedings again.

It has been a long journey and we can’t wait to take her home when she is safe and ready.
