Carolyn Miles, beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece and cherished friend, passed away at her home in Austin, Texas, on May 6, 2024. Her remarkable journey through life left an indelible mark on the world, characterized by her passion, dedication, and profound kindness. Born in Bay Village, Ohio, Carolyn's adventurous spirt and compassionate nature carried her across various states and countries, enriching every community she touched.

Carolyn is survived by her son, Miles Garber; her parents, Jack and Betty Miles; brothers John and Patrick Miles (and their families); her former spouse, Adam Garber; extended family; and a multitude of friends who will continue to cherish her memory and legacy.

A lifelong learner and seeker of knowledge, Carolyn earned a Bachelor's in Russian Studies and Political Science from Indiana University, a Master's in International Affairs from Columbia University, and a Master's in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. Her academic pursuits were fueled by a desire to understand and improve the human condition—a theme that defined her varied career.

Carolyn's professional life was as impactful as it was diverse. From helping former communist communities embrace democratic policies to raising millions for educational institutions and hospitals, she made a significant difference. Her final professional chapter was perhaps her most profound; as a psychotherapist at the Louis-Laves Webb Counseling Center, she offered solace and guidance to many, drawing on her deep empathy and understanding.

A committed practitioner of Buddhism, Carolyn found strength and solace in her faith. Her beliefs in impermanence and the interconnectedness of all beings shaped her approach to life and helped her to live with intention and grace, even in her final days. Carolyn was an active member of the Austin Shambhala Center, where she deepened her practice and formed lasting bonds within the community.

Carolyn’s philosophy of life was a beacon of hope and resilience, reminding us that every interaction is an opportunity to leave a positive imprint. Her spirit, imbued with warmth and light, will forever inspire those fortunate enough to have known her.

In celebrating Carolyn's extraordinary life, a private memorial will be held in June, followed by a public celebration from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on July 13, 2024, at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum in Austin, Texas. Friends, family, and colleagues are invited to join together with her Shambhala community to honor a life beautifully lived. Please RSVP at the link below.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to an academic fund established for Carolyn's son, Miles, to support his education and future endeavors:

Carolyn's legacy of love, wisdom, and kindness will undoubtedly echo through the generations. May we all carry forward her spirit of compassion and purposeful living.
