Carla’s Story

"She is clothed with STRENGTH and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future." Proverbs 31:25

I have probably retyped this welcome post over 20 times, because I can't seem to find the exact words to share this news with all of you, but here it goes. Carla has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). She will begin chemotherapy Friday, November 10th at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, where she will be inpatient for the next 3-4 weeks. She has a wonderful team of doctors and nurses at Highlands Oncology taking the very best care of her, and she has an incredible support team of family and friends who are going to be here every step of the way.

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using this to keep family and friends updated in one place. Due to treatment, visitors will be limited during her stay, so the family asks that you instead send words of encouragement, pictures and/or videos, comedic relief, and all the things here to keep her spirits up. Updates will be made on this site as we take this journey with her. Please pray for her healing, wisdom for her provider team, comfort for her children who are carrying the weight of all that is going on, her two sisters who are walking alongside her every step of the way and strength for her family and extended family of friends as they step in to take care of her. One of the first messages she sent to me included #strongerthanthestorm and I felt it was fitting as a title for her site. She has always been stronger than the storm, and she will lead the crusade to fight this and be even stronger than before. CLICK THE WAYS TO HELP  TAB FOR DONATIONS STRAIGHT TO CARLA

As we all know, Carla pours her heart and soul into everyone around her. She gives back to her community, is the first to volunteer for causes, and can pop up an event better than anyone in the business. Her customers and business partners are like family to her and she will go above and beyond to give the very best of herself to support each and every one of them. She is present at every ribbon cutting, fundraiser, grand-opening, and charity event by invitation or she is the one planning it. If you've had the pleasure of working with Carla in any capacity, you know how tenacious and determined she is in how she manages her business. If you're a friend of Carla's, you've undoubtedly received her gifts of compassion, support and steadfast loyalty. She is a leader, a light, and a constant for so many. It's now our turn to pour all we have into her as she has poured so much into all of us.

The financial burden this places on Carla is heavy, and while she remains focused on healing, it does not go unnoticed by the rest of us that she needs our help.  An  account has been set up at Centennial Bank to allow us to carry some of that burden for her.  We all want to show her how big her community really is and how we all will lift her up when she can't do it alone. She is not alone; she has a vast army of supporters here at her side and she can lean on us.  Please visit the Ways to Help tab for a link to the PayPal account or donate directly via PayPal send to @CCSTTS50. We appreciate your support, prayers, and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Carla Harris

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the delayed update but Carla has been very busy in going to/from clinic days from 7 days/week down to 3 days/week now. PRAISE!

She had her one month biopsy done to reveal an outstanding and long awaited report of NO SIGNS OF LEUKEMIA! So so grateful!

She has several side effects post transplant that she deals with on the daily from rashes, no appetite, funky taste buds to abdominal discomfort and every day needs magnesium as her rejection medications cause that. Just to name a few. So many medications…

She is experiencing a lot from the graft vs host and the best explanation is this. Though hers are the common symptoms and nothing dangerous.
{Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a systemic disorder that occurs when the graft's immune cells recognize the host as foreign and attack the recipient's body cells. “Graft” refers to transplanted, or donated tissue, and “host” refers to the tissues of the recipient.}

As far as today’s appt with her Oncology Dr, she is on track and numbers are great! My specific question I just wanted to hear from him was, “so, I’m hearing that there are no signs of rejection, is this accurate?” NO SIGNS! Can we all just breathe some much needed air?! PRAISE GOD!

She is in deed so appreciative in her temporary housing from close friends in the Saline County area (our childhood stomping grounds). Side note-for those that are scared to step into community, it’s taken every single one of us to help walk alongside Carla and we couldn’t have done any of this without the village of support! Do IT!

Anyways, she is mentally ready to have her life-giving, active life, social, family in one place, group trips, calendar maxed cup, filled to the brim again but understandably it’ll come when it needs to.

So much respect for this lady. She’s truly a beautiful soul & she inspires me and all of us.
