Callan’s Story

Site created on September 7, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website.  We are so grateful for the outpouring of love you are surrounding us with during this challenging time.  We are using this resource help keep our  family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your ongoing prayers, support,  and words of hope and encouragement. Each and every message brightens the moments as we navigate this surreal journey.

Here's how our cancer journey began...
Callan started 6th grade at Hudson Middle School (HMS) on Tuesday, August 29th and was loving his new routine. Connecting with friends, meeting his new teachers, looking forward to basketball tryouts and joining the HMS golf club. (And closely following the Premier LaCrosse League games on ESPN as a loyal Atlas fan!) Following a "routine" follow-up doctor's appointment on Thursday, August 31st, he was referred to Minnesota Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Callan was subsequently admitted and diagnosed with leukemia (type T-ALL) on Friday, September 1, 2023. He began chemotherapy on Monday, Sept. 4th. Carter and I are staying here at the hospital with him during his inpatient stay.

The diagnosis came as a shock to us all as he didn't have symptoms other than a swollen lymph node and a mild, intermittent rash on his neck. We are so thankful he told us about the swollen lymph node or we wouldn't have known and precious time would have been lost. We are also incredibly grateful for the expertise of his doctors in identifying the concern and responding quickly.  He is getting excellent care at Children's and we are very grateful for the expertise and kindness of so many.
As our family and friends, we ask you join us as partners on this journey. Callan's treatment will significantly compromise his immune system in the immediate weeks to come so we need to be very careful about interactions and potential exposures. In-person interactions aren't recommended until it's safe and cleared by his doctors. However, staying connected with friends and family during this time is incredibly important to us all, especially Callan. Please keep sending the texts, emails, online gaming invites, and love! We are using this site to share updates efficiently, but welcome the ongoing direct connections with you all.

We will also be needing help in the months to come but are not at the point of even knowing which end is up quite yet. Thank you for your generous offers to help us in so many ways. We promise to keep you updated as we move forward!

Good news-Callan's counts are up and we have the green light to move forward with treatment tomorrow.  This past week has been a bonus in terms of seeing family and friends and enjoying time outside before we enter the bubble again...

Thank you for your ongoing love, support, and prayers- they mean so much and help lift us up during this challenging time.
