Hi friends and family,
I’m so pleased to say Caleb just got out of surgery and it went better than the surgeon anticipated! He will be starting to wake up over the next two hours and then I’ll get to see him.
Now onto the details…
- The surgeon performed a bowel resection (I said reconstruction previously which was incorrect). So he removed 50 cm of bowel and connected the two open ends.
- The surgeon ALSO placed a G tube which can be used to physically help remove future blockages as well as provide nutrition.
- The surgeon found a “large mass” in Caleb’s colon that they’re sending off to be biopsied. That also assumably has had an effect on his ability to digest food.
- And lastly, he did a hernia repair surgery as well.
Going forward things we are concerned about and needing to watch are:
- Caleb is at high risk for infection internally and on the external surgical wound.
- There is major concern that the bowel resection might leak and could lead to many complications and potentially another surgery.
I’m still anxious to lay eyes on him personally and see how he wakes up (no one knew he had any strokes after transplant until he didn’t wake up as usual). But the doctor and care team seem optimistic so I’m going to breathe easy for now.
Love you all and thanks for being with us!
