Bill’s Story

Site created on September 11, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting. As many of you may know Bill Serra has been battling Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis(IPF) since October of 2018.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a type of lung disease that results in scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs for an unknown reason. We don’t know what caused this disease, but the scarring has gotten worse and it has become harder and harder for Bill to take a deep breath. His lungs are not getting enough oxygen.

He has been on supplemental oxygen for two years and has slowly needed more oxygen to breathe over time. We tried a drug trial with the Mayo Clinic to slow the progression of the disease. But ultimately, it did not work. He is eligible for a double lung transplant. and our CARE team is moving forward with plans for a potential transplant in the near future.

Bill has been hospitalized many times in the last several months. Most recently he was hospitalized on Thursday 09/10/20. Friday morning at 1:00 am Bill was transferred from St. Joseph's Hospital in Brainerd, MN to St. Mary's hospital in Rochester, MN  He is in the Intensive Care Unit and his team is working hard to figure out the next steps that need to be taken.

Our family feels reassured that he is at Mayo Clinic with some of the best physicians and nurses in the world. We are asking for thoughts and prayers as Bill continues his ongoing battle for new lungs. Bill's daughter Kathryn will do the updating to the website, please contact her with any questions. If you choose to leave Well Wishes for Bill he does have the website and will be reading them. Please check back for updates!

Journal entry by Jon Serra

My Dad taught me how to do a lot of things. He taught me how to mow the lawn at a very young age and it is still something that I love to do, even now. The older he got, the more I took over all of the mowing and yard work as he watched.

When I was young, he would put me on his lap and let me steer the car to teach me how to drive. Later he helped me study to pass a test to get my permit and get my driver's license.

He also helped me with cub scouts and boy scouts and selling Christmas wreaths, and going to meetings with me. He also helped me with my Eagle Scout project.

My Dad taught me how to do the right things and was there for me during the good times and the bad times. We had a lot of good memories together.

He will always be in my heart and I will know he is with me.

- Jon
