Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Right after Thanksgiving I was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, it is a group of cancers that affects the bone marrow. I went to the Emergency Center thinking I had an increased heart rate and found out the heart rate was due to my hemoglobin of 5.4 (normal is 12-16).  My bone marrow biopsy showed that I had MDS and that a Stem Cell Transplant was the way to go. When you are told you have a year to live if you do nothing the decision is more easily made!!

I am working with Dr. Ogaily a wonderful hematologist and Karmanos Cancer center. Karmanos is doing the work to contact a match on the registry so I am excited and hope that they say yes. They told me I matched with 3 people which made me feel better.

At this point I have had 7 units of blood and the week after I get a transfusion I feel really good. I have been having a wonderful time with my family and my friends during this time before I start my Stem Cell Transplant treatment and will use this site to let you all know what is going on with me.

Merry Christmas to all of you.

What is the spirit of Christmas you might ask? I will tell you it was an unknown person who went through the trouble and took the time to donate their stem cells to me. I did not know this person, if they allow me to meet them I want to give them a watch which might sound funny but they have given me the gift of time. Besides that we make a pretty nice Shinola watch right in Detroit.

It has been a little over 10 months since I received the stem cells and I am doing very well. They say the best chance of beating the cancer fully is to be off immunosuppressants at 6 months. I am still on 3 a day as my skin, eyes and liver don't react to well as I decrease. So having said that my blood work is wonderful right now, my liver and skin are doing well. I see an eye doctor out of U of M for my eyes and they are doing ok.

I have had a lot of family and friends come and visit me this year and it sure has been appreciated. I remember everyone of you that took the time and went out of your way to send me a card, an email or visited. On they days I had to cancel visits as I didn't wake up feeling well I still appreciate the effort that it took. I love you guys.

I say I love you a lot more to people, my heart is overwhelmed at times with what people have done. The other day two of my cousins, you know who you are came over just to dance outside my window so I could see them. Luckily they were not sick and got to come in and visit. I don't want to name any names because I don't want to leave anyone out!
