Ben’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

We never thought we would hear that one of our children has Acute Leukemia/Burkitt’s Lymphoma. It all started with some headaches and tooth pain, but was manageable with ibuprofen. However, it got worse when Ben could no longer play his trumpet at band practice. He had to leave early because he was feeling faint. We thought he was just dehydrated. His father took him to an urgent care to make sure he didn’t have COVID-19. Thankfully he tested negative. They sent him home to rest and hydrate. Throughout the weekend Ben seemed he was getting better. He was eating and drinking some. However, on Monday he told his mother he couldn’t keep anything down. At that time his color was off and we noticed some bruising on his leg and arm.

We took him to a free standing ER. His hemoglobin was low enough that they told us he needed blood. There were no rooms in a hospital nearby for him to be sent to. They did a CT scan and found that his spleen was bleeding. They repeated his hemoglobin. It dropped to 4.7. They got blood delivered to them so they could start it. They called Life Flight to take him to Memorial Hermann downtown. They were able to remove his ruptured spleen and he was doing better. However, they had strongly believed he had leukemia.

After a few days recovering from surgery we were able to get Ben transferred to MD Anderson where we confirmed his diagnosis. Ben started treatment on September 15, 2021. He has a long hard treatment ahead of him. We believe in a Big God who can do miraculous things. We are praying for complete healing, so Ben can fulfill his dreams for the future and enjoy a meaningful life.

Ben is a senior in high school who was looking forward to a somewhat “normal” year. He absolutely loves being in the band. He plays the trumpet. He also enjoys studying Physics with hopes of majoring in it in college. He has three siblings, Meredith, Cameron and Caleb. We have enjoyed some wonderful times as a family on vacation and look forward to having many more vacations in the future. Thank you for your prayers and support during this difficult time.

Isaiah 40:31 But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
