Ben’s Story

Site created on September 21, 2023

In October of 2022 my brother BJ found a lump on the side of his neck. He sought medical help and his journey to a diagnosis started - he underwent CT scans, a failed biopsy, lymph node removal surgery and ultimately a PET scan, and in January 2023 received a diagnosis. It was confirmed to be very aggressive cancer which was spreading through his lymph nodes and had metastasized to his lungs. Even after working with several specialties, the origin of his cancer is still unknown. They are proceeding with treatment for lung cancer, as that is the primary area of where his cancer is located - the cancer is causing his lymph nodes to be necrotic (tissue death that is not able to be reversed) and covers his upper lung lobes.

My brother is a hardworking, loving man who has been handed a really rough diagnosis. At only 39 years old, his entire life is on hold while he undergoes treatment. Chemo treatment is scheduled every 3 weeks, along with an immunotherapy which depletes his immune system so the chemo can be most effective. While wanting the chemo to do it's job, it makes him very vulnerable to infections and following his first chemo round was hospitalized with bilateral pneumonia. The physical toll of chemo and his treatments prevents him from working currently, and his top priority is his health.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Laurel McEvers

With deep sadness, I provide the final update that BJ has passed away. I was with him, which is what he wanted and it was peaceful.

We will be having a Celebration of Life at some point, not imminently. There are some plans in the works which require a bit of time and he would have liked a summer celebration.

Please, share stories, photos maybe a video or two. He was deeply loved and will leave a massive hole in the hearts of many. In the end, I told him Elliot was waiting for him and I know they're already up to antics of some sort, together.
