Journal entry by Jaci Helgeson

When they say a NICU stay is like a roller coaster ride, they aren’t exaggerating… The past few days have been pretty tough for our little guy. On Tuesday he started having more episodes of apnea. Throughout the day, it was taking him longer to come up from them and he was pretty lethargic. By Tuesday night, he had had 9 apneas where he needed help to breathe again. They ended up switching his cpap to sipap in order to give him more oxygen pressure hoping it would remind him to breathe on his own.

It took a couple days for the doctors to figure out what was causing all of this. His X-rays were showing that his belly was great and his lungs were looking better than ever. After running labs, his CRP levels kept getting higher so they knew he had some type of infection. They did a urine sample and finally figured out he had a UTI. There was suspicion that the UTI stemmed from NEC which is a serious intestinal infection. They decided to run more labs and have another X-ray done. They didn’t see anything more concerning so they ruled this out for now. They will continue to do X-rays each day to keep an eye on his belly. The good thing is a UTI and NEC are treated the same way regardless.

Tayen is on day 3 of antibiotics and they are withholding feeds. He is getting fluids along with his caffeine, sodium and some added fats to make sure he doesn’t lose a ton of weight. They will have him on antibiotics for a total of 5-10 days depending on which type of antibiotic they decide to continue having him on.

Because of all this, they are waiting to do his eye exam until next week. He did get his head ultrasound done today and it looked wonderful! We are so relieved for such good outcomes despite everything going on. Tayen definitely had us all pretty concerned and stressed, but he is doing great today and he definitely has some of his spunk back!

Much love, the Roemmich’s
