Avalyn’s Story

Site created on January 15, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We decided to start a page for Avalyn’s surgery updates for those who would like to follow along with how she’s doing or pray for her.

History: Avalyn was diagnosed 20 weeks gestation with Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV), Transposition of the Greater Arteries (TGA), multiple Ventricular Septal Defects (VSD) and Pulmonary Atresia (PA). This was obviously devastating and we had no idea what any of this meant but we were willing to learn and do whatever we needed to for her.
At 5 days old she had her first Surgery to place a BT Shunt to allow for more Pulmonary flow. Her second surgery was at 6 months old. Her Surgeon had attempted to fully repair her heart by starting with the closures of her VSD’s (holes in the heart) but complications led him to place a second BT Shunt to give her more Pulmonary blood flow. Giving us another year or so before attempting her repair again.

Current: Because of the complexity of her Heart, her team had requested a 3D model be made of her Heart. They’ve come to find difficulty in planning for her full repair. As things stand now, her Surgeons team still plans/wants to attempt her full repair but there is a possibility complications could hinder that. They really won’t know until they open her up. Not comforting. In the case of things going badly, there are options to give her another temporary fix (like her BT Shunts) to allow her to grow till she’s about 5 or so and attempt again.

On March 5th we’ll be handing her over for the 3rd time. Just after her 2nd birthday.  The more we do this the harder it seems to get. We will be posting updates, any changes and pictures regarding her journey on this page. So please follow along if you’d like to. We’re always in need of prayer regarding her so please add her (and us) to your prayers. God has give us 2 years with a healthy, active little girl and we are so grateful for that. We can only pray He allows us more.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jackie Dvorak

Avalyn has had some progress these past couple days. Yesterday she was able to get out of bed and sit on a play mat, which she didn’t care for. But then got to snuggle mom for over an hour while she slept and we rocked. She’s been a lot more awake and alert being off the heavy narcotics and is only on Tylenol and Ibuprofen for pain. Drinking a little bit and eating very lightly as her stomach is still waking up. We’ve seen some random smiles and had some mild interactions from her but she’s still overall not interested in communicating, if it’s not to ask for her paci, then it’s just not much at all.

Daily, they check her temporary pacemaker to see if her heart is tolerating it’s own pace and still no response. Her underlining heart rate was 40 but has come up a little to 60. Hoping it’s starting to make its way back up. She’s still having some output through her chest tubes, thinking she’ll still need them for a few more days. Yesterday she had an X-ray and it showed everything still looked really good from her surgery. A few small holes in her septum still but they are small enough that they’re not causing problems and should close on their own. One thing it showed was her right side is showing that it’s a little stiff but is likely because it had been doing a lot of the pumping, when both her main Arteries were plumbed to it. Besides letting her continue to rest and start getting out of bed, recovering from major heart surgery, we’re really just watching her heart rate function to determine is she’ll need to go back in for a permanent pacemaker.

Please, as you continue to pray for her, keep this pacemaker thing in mind. We know that whatever happens in the end, God is and has been watching over her. It’s tough to have your once happy and busy little two year old be going through such a big thing like this.
