Anita’s Story

Site created on May 9, 2022

Our beautiful Mom was recently diagnosed with an extremely large BENIGN (NON CANCEROUS) brain tumor on her brain stem (meningioma).  She evidently had had symptoms off and on over many years.  In true form, she kept her symptoms pretty quiet, since she didn't want to worry us.  The tumor was very slow growing, and her symptoms were evidently mostly mild-moderate.  Nothing ever came of her mentioning these symptoms to her doctors over the years until she mentioned it to her new doctor in Houston around the end of February.  Her symptoms, dizziness, headaches, and hearing loss, had become bothersome enough that she was referred to an ENT, Dr. Lin, (her personal hero and angel), and he was the first to order a brain scan.  The scan showed that, indeed, Mom had a brain tumor.  Dr. Lin then referred her to Dr. Britz (head of neurosurgery at Houston Methodist) and he felt like tumor removal surgery was her only option.  She had surgery #1 (skull prep) on April 20.  Due to the complexity of the tumor, her safety, and a scheduling error, she did not have surgery #2 (tumor removal) until Friday, May 6.  Dr. Britz was able to remove 50% of the tumor - enough to relieve the pressure which is causing her symptoms.  The plan is to follow up with radiation in a few months.

To be frank, Mom is suffering some pretty severe consequences as a result of her surgery.  We remain hopeful that with time, rehabilitation, a lot of hard work, and much prayer, she will overcome all of these obstacles that she is facing.  We are especially thankful that this is a benign tumor.

We started this page to keep all who love her updated.  We appreciate your love and concern for our Mom, and we sincerely appreciate all of your good thoughts and prayers.  Dad has been a trooper and has been at her side every possible moment.

Much love,

Stefanie, Stacy, and Eric

Newest Update

Journal entry by Stefanie McIntosh

Good morning!

Stefanie here....it's been a couple of weeks since the last update.  We are exactly 2 months out from surgery date of May 6.  They have said the magic numbers for improvement are 3-6 months.  Things have been moving along slowly but surely with slow and steady improvements.  We keep reminding ourselves that this is a marathon - NOT a race!

Today…I am sharing the MOST HOPEFUL news!  Mom had another barium swallow test yesterday.  SHE SHOWED 50% IMPROVEMENT!!!!  Praise God!  We are all so excited!  Mom is so happy!  This is just the boost that she needed.  And, frankly, I think we all needed it almost as much.  SHE called me at work herself to tell me (we haven't talked on the phone since before the surgery, since her voice is so hoarse).  We were both 😭😭!  She will now be able to have "nectar thick water with chin tuck and coughing techniques to clear residuals".

Mom has been working so hard going to rehab, doing her exercises, and walking.  Her balance is improving.  In fact, they are planning for her to transition to a cane soon and get rid of her walker.  I personally think she looks better each week.  Dad continues to be a trooper and remains right by her side constantly.

Her 75th birthday was on Monday, July 4.  She did not want to celebrate 🥲, but I really think she got her best gift yesterday:  HOPE!  She did love all of the flowers, messages, cards, and gifts that she received.

Please keep the prayers coming.  They are working!  "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer".  Romans 12:12

Love and thanks to all,

Stefanie 💚
